새로운 미래를 이끌어 갈 여성과학기술인들의 축제

- 국제여성과학기술인 대회(BIEN 2021) 개최 -

□ 과학기술정보통신부(장관 임혜숙, 이하 ‘과기정통부’)는 8월 18일(수)부터 20일(금)까지 3일간「국제여성과학기술인대회 BIEN 2021(이하 ‘BIEN 2021’)」을 개최한다고 밝혔다.

ㅇ BIEN 2021은 2003년부터 시작된 국내 최초 국제여성과학기술인 융합학술대회로 대한여성과학기술인회(회장 임효숙)와 세계여성과학기술인네트워크(회장 김정선) 주최로 개최되며,

ㅇ 세계 33개국 과학기술인 450여명이 온·오프라인으로 참여하여 “새로운 시대를 이끌어가는 여성과학기술인(Women Scientists and Engineers leading the Future from New Normal)”을 주제로 새시대 여성과학기술인의 역할을 정립하고, 우수 연구 성과를 공유하는 자리가 될 것이다.

□ 개회식에는 과기정통부 임혜숙 장관과 국내 주요 인사 20여명이 현장 참석하였으며, 과학기술정보방송통신위원회 이원욱 위원장과 대전시 허태정 시장은 영상으로 BIEN 2021 개최를 축하하였다. 

□ 이번 행사는 바이러스 분야의 세계적인 석학 강칠용 교수(캐나타 웨스턴 온타리오 대학교)의 기조 강연*을 시작으로,

* “Strategies for COVID-19 vaccine development and establishment of a global herd immunity against SARS-CoV-2”을 주제로 COVID-19 백신개발과 집단면역조성에 대해 강연

ㅇ 8월 19일(목) ~ 20일(금) 3일 동안 7개 분야 학술세션*과 함께 특별세션, 차세대 국제 여성과학기술인 캠프(YWS Camp), 여성과학기술인 정책포럼(MAPWiST)이 진행된다.

* BT(Biotechnology), IT(Information Technology), E3T(Environment/Energy/Earth Technology), NT(Nano Technology), ST(Space Technology), BS(Basic Science), CT(Convergence Technology)

□ 온·오프라인으로 진행되는 7개 분야 학술세션에서는 43명의 연사가 참여하여 강연을 진행하는데, 주요 연사는,

ㅇ ‘화성궤도에 성공적으로 안착한 화성탐사선 아말의 성공을 이끈 UAE 첨단과학기술부 장관이자 우주청장’인 사라 빈 유세프 알 아미리 장관, ‘고체 산 연료전지를 최초로 개발’한 미국 노스웨스턴 대학의 소시나 M. 하일레 교수, ‘한국판 뉴딜의 제로에너지, 탄소중립을 선도’하는 이명주 명지대학교 교수, ‘고위험병원체 현장분석용 고감도 검출기술을 개발’한 주재범 중앙대학교 교수 등이 있다.

□ 특별 세션에서는 ‘인류 위기를 극복하기 위한 여성의 역할’과 ‘여성과학기술인 연구 성과 관리 및 활용성 극대화’를 주제로 강연과 토론이 이루어진다.

□ 아시아·태평양 차세대 여성과학기술인들의 글로벌 역량 강화와 네트워킹을 위해 2013년부터 추진 중인 차세대 국제 여성과학기술인 캠프(YWS Camp)는

ㅇ 온라인 멘토링, 문화 체험 등이 온·오프라인으로 진행되며, BIEN 2021 홈페이지에서 포스터 발표, 온라인 랩투어 등에 참가할 수 있다.

□ 아시아·태평양 여성과학기술인 국제정책포럼(MAPWiST)에서는 코로나 시대, 과학기술 분야 여성 진출과 역할 제고에 대해 기조강연과 각국을 대표하는 여성과학자들의 패널토론이 이루어지며 관심 있는 사람은 누구나 온라인으로 참여가 가능하다. 

□ 임혜숙 과기정통부 장관은 ‘BIEN 2021’ 개회식 축사를 통해 “세계 각국을 대표하는 과학기술인이 참여하는 본 행사는 국내외 우수 여성과학기술인의 협력을 강화하고, 미래를 책임질 차세대 여성과학기술인이 글로벌 인재로 성장하는 데에 크게 기여할 것 ”이라며,

ㅇ “정부도 여성과학기술인이 사회 각 분야에서 역량을 충분히 발휘하여 성장해 나갈 수 있도록, 지위 향상과 지원정책을 지속 확대해 나가고, 일가정 양립 문화 확산에도 노력을 아끼지 않겠다”라고 밝혔다.
